After nearly two decades writing and recording some of her generation's most emotionally powerful music, Tori Amos releases her first seasonal album, Midwinter Graces. A follow up to Tori's critically acclaimed studio album, Abnormally Attracted To Sin, Midwinter Graces finds Tori reworking and expanding on classic carols as well as developing some of her very own seasonal tracks
You're not likely to hear many of her singles on your local top 40-based radio station. But MIDWINTER GRACES, Tori's eleventh studio recording, is an album for everyone. Tori's take on the seasonal theme is a huge and surprising winner. There's little controversy here. Unlike some of her earlier releases, she doesn't mention drugs (FROM THE CHOIRGIRL HOTEL) or Satan (BOYS FOR PELE) or masturbation (UNDER THE PINK), but for once, that's a good thing in an Amos recording.
Genre: Singer-Songwriter. Not bad, as Christmas albums go, and Amos has at least tried to do something a bit different by combining her own compositions (Winter's Carol being the obvious highlight) with traditional carols. She loses considerable marks, however, for that appalling photo-shopped front cover. Or consider a donation?
Tori Amos loves to stun and surprise, and with her newest album, Midwinter Graces, she's thrown another left curve at fans who delight in her idiosyncratic musical stylings. Although the record is most certainly a holiday offering, Amos, the daughter of a Methodist minister, perfers to call it a 'seasonal' or 'solstice' album. As you know, I don't like to dwell on the familiar," she says. That just doesn't interest me - and I don't think my audience wants me to give them what they can get elsewhere . There's not a saccharine nor shocking moment to be found, and Amos admits this might be one of the record's most starting aspects
In one respect, Tori Amos releasing a holiday album makes perfect sense. The holidays are infused with religion, and the singer-songwriter references religion as much as poets reference autumn leaves. However, Amos isn’t exactly channeling a gospel choir when she talks about religion or spirituality. This is, after all, the woman who wrote, God sometimes you just don’t come through, Do you need a woman to look after you? A fantastic song, but not something you put on while trimming the tree. Unsurprisingly, Amos hasn’t released a Christmas album
