Harry James And His Orchestra 1948-49 is a double album by American trumpeter Harry James with The Harry James Orchestra. The album consists of live radio transcripts recorded during 1948 and 1949 and was released in 1969 by Big Band Landmarks (Volumes X-XI). As bop surpassed swing by the late 1940s, James was surprisingly open to its influence.

Mean to Me" is probably the best and most representative track here, a swinging number highlighted by some hot trumpet courtesy of James, and "Undecided" runs only a little bit behind in appeal. Some tracks ("Rose Room") are more subtle, but the performances are all engaging and lively; a lot of care has gone into the selection, which is entirely instrumental. Everything is live, from radio broadcasts before full audiences, and one gets a strong sense of room ambience, as well as listener reaction and response.

Harry Haag James (March 15, 1916 – July 5, 1983) was an American musician who is best known as a trumpet-playing band leader who led a big band from 1939 to 1946. He broke up his band for a short period in 1947 but shortly after he reorganized and was active again with his band from then until his death in 1983. He was especially known among musicians for his technical proficiency as well as his tone, and was influential on new trumpet players from the late 1930s into the 1940s.
