The most stunning aspect of Safehouses isn't any singular stylistic tic, though: it's the overall sweep of the thing. Cayzer works through a breadth of sub-genres- the bass music of "The Slump", "Prism"'s whomping acid-house squelch, the digitized hip-hop clap of "C-Beams", and most impressively, the Gas-recalling ambient smother of the title track. That he's able to incorporate so many recognizant signifiers while transcending pastiche is impressive; the fact that he's done so while moving light years away from his breakout single, last.

The release of this EP from feted London producer Pariah on the legendary (and newly invigorated) R&S label is symptomatic of dubstep's seemingly inexorable melding with techno. But then R&S was never merely a techno label, though its most notable successes through the 90s often fell rather snugly into that category. Now the generous Safehouses EP boasts six further exploratory productions, each seemingly acting as a confirmation of the potential shown in his previous release. The Slump shows an aptitude for thunderous, sub-heavy electro. Prism is a building, staggered groove layered with rave vocals. Railroad is more in the Burial vein, though fuller sounding than the Hyperdub don's tunnel vision production, and with sporadic injections of junglist breakbeats.
SAFEHOUSES EP (2X12). 2x12" Vinyl UK. R&S Records, rs1005. The debut single contained the first two Pariah tracks ever recorded and were instantly recognisable as referencing the hip hop beat collages of Dilla and the moody atmospheric 2 step rhythms of Burial. This doublepack sees Pariah move further towards developing his own sound, and takes in slamming percussive club tracks, deeper 2 step excursions and downtempo and beatless highlights.
