Major Tom is a fictional astronaut referenced in David Bowie's songs "Space Oddity", "Ashes to Ashes", "Hallo Spaceboy", "New Killer Star" and "Blackstar". Bowie's own interpretation of the character evolved throughout his career. In the song "Ashes to Ashes" (1980), Bowie reinterprets Major Tom as an oblique autobiographical symbol for himself.

In a 2003 interview with Performing Songwriter magazine, Bowie explained: "In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. In 1972, the album was re-titled Space Oddity and re-issued in the US after Bowie achieved modest success in America with the singles "Changes" ( and "The Jean Genie" (. In 1983, the German electro musician Peter Schilling released a sequel to "Space Oddity" called "Major Tom (I'm Coming Home). Set to a techno beat, it tells the story of Major Tom in space.

Possibly the worst record committed to vinyl in the 20th century. It desecrates the original song and lasts longer than the original song (six minutes) whilst adding nothing of value. If found please recycle into traffic cones.
