The best recordings of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. Six of the best contraltos of all time. Nacht und Träume, D827 (1825). A decidedly slower and calmer affair than Erlkönig, this setting of Nacht und Träume ('Night and Dreams') is challenging for other reasons. Drawing text from Goethe's Faust, Schubert wrote this song at the tender age of 17. The whole piece follows the circle of a spinning wheel, from the looping right hand figure to the modulations which venture through numerous keys before returning to the home key of D minor. The vocal line even imitates a circle, often centred on A, B flat and D. At moments of climax the voice soars upwards, before coming back down in resignation to repeat the opening lines once again: 'Mein Ruh' ist hin, Mein herz ist schwer' ('My peace is gone, My heart is heavy').

Schubert, like Haydn and Mozart, was exceptionally prolific. The dude wrote hundreds of Lieder (short songs for voice and piano), a bunch of chamber music, and many symphonies. The craziest part? He died at 31. Let that sink in for a moment. Schubert lived right on the cusp between two periods of music history: the Classical and the Romantic. Need a quick refresh of what that means? Read this!) One of my music professors in college said that Schubert composed Romantic music with the tools of a Classical composer. You can hear it quite well in these pieces below. Each piece expressively tells.

Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer. He wrote some 600 lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer. Schubert (The Best of). 19,913 listeners. 27 Jun 1997 · 10 tracks.

Schubert's ability in setting text to music, (word painting) is unsurpassed. He is the best songwriter who ever lived, and his sudden, effortless modulations (major to minor, vice versa) is extraordinary to behold. The promise unfilfilled by his early death at 31, is the most tragic in classical music. com/watch?v WbOKlBFVHNM. com/watch?v HU giDkzwb0.

While Schubert was still struggling to hold down his full-time teaching post, he not only composed 145 lieder (songs), the Second and Third Symphonies, two sonatas and a series of miniatures for solo piano, two mass settings and other shorter choral works, four stage works, and a string quartet, in addition to various other projects. This period of intense creative activity remains one of the most inexplicable feats of productivity in musical history  . During 1815 alone, Schubert composed over 140 masterly song settings - including the unforgettable 'Erlkonig' - although he was still only 18 at the time. Schubert: the man.
