When Bon Jovi’s New Jersey reached No. 1 in October 1988, it fulfilled the high expectations of the band and their record label. Still, if Jon Bon Jovi had his way, the project could have looked radically different. In early 1988, Bon Jovi wanted to make New Jersey (then titled Sons of Beaches) a double album. This was met with a vehement push-back by his label. Polygram wouldn’t let me, they were adamant, the singer stated during an interview at the time. The label was concerned about the price-point and the potential for reduced sales

But Bon Jovi’s success surpassed even those wildest fantasies. On the tour that the band undertook to support Slipper. they had played to somewhere in the region of four million people – an incredible feat in its own right. The album had gone stratospheric, no doubt helped by the heavy MTV rotation of slick videos that accompanied Livin’ On A Prayer and You Give Love A Bad Name, and the frontman’s charismatic good looks – tailor-made for posters that would adorn the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls. But this wasn’t a wholly selfless gesture on the part of Sambora and Bon Jovi; they were to receive a cut of the royalties from Skid Row’s first album as payment for their assistance and work on the band’s behalf. However, it all ended strangely and in court, and needless to say there was a huge falling out between the bands – specifically between Jon and Skid Row’s volatile frontman Sebastian Bach.

Bon Jovi’s admiration for Southside runs deep. Among the rockers of the Jersey Shore, he says, "Johnny has his place in the Holy Trinity. Bruce, Steven and Johnny were that to m. "He produced the first original band I was part of, called The Rest," adds Bon Jovi. Johnny let us open for him several times while I was still in high school and in the years shortly thereafter. I learned a lot of my stage banter from him, and I like to say it’s his fault I can’t dance. Then again, that has never been the point. It’s not about making money from an album. It’s having material to play live. We do 80 to 100 shows a year, and that’s where you make your money.
