The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

The Velvet Underground’s first album only sold a few thousand copies, but everyone who bought one formed a band. Brian Eno. Forty-five years after its release, everything that was supposed to have made The Velvet Underground & Nico special has been nearly eradicated by its own legend.

The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 in New York City by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, t John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise (replaced by Moe Tucker in 1965). The band was initially active between 1965 and 1973, and was briefly managed by the pop artist Andy Warhol, serving as the house band at the Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967.

While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting for the Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. Few rock albums are as important as The Velvet Underground & Nico, and fewer still have lost so little of their power to surprise and intrigue more 50 years after first hitting the racks.

The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground’s The Complete Matrix Tapes Coming to Vinyl for the First Time. 8xLP box set gathers highlights from the band’s 1969 residency at the Matrix in San Francisco.

Now billed as the Velvet Underground with Nico, Warhol incorporated the band into a series of multimedia performances dubbed the Exploding Plastic Inevitable: a marriage of underground music, film, dance and lights. The tracks for the album were largely complete by May 1966, but a combination of production logistics – including the tricky stickers on the cover – and promotional concerns delayed the release for nearly a year. The exact circumstances remain hazy, but instead of holding the record execs responsible, or Warhol in his capacity as their manager, the Velvet Underground blamed an unlikely target: their MGM/Verve labelmate Frank Zappa.

Listen online and stay in a good mood. Org Album: The Velvet Underground & Nico 45th Anniversary (2012).

Album · 1967 · 11 Songs. Between its reimagining of blues drone, avant-garde distortion and doo-wop transcendence into a blueprint for all things punk, goth and shoegaze, The Velvet Underground’s banana-adorned debut invented the future-way back in 1967. The fact that songs like I’m Waiting for the Man, Venus In Furs and Heroin dared to tread uncharted drugs-and-kinky-sex backstreets helped too. Moe Tucker’s drumming is as deadpan as Lou Reed’s vocals, John Cale’s electric viola is straight-up haunting and Nico, on All Tomorrow’s Parties and Femme Fatale, plays the ice queen to end all ice queens.
