Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of American group the Four Preps, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It attained worldwide fame after being covered and reworked by English synth-pop duo Soft Cell in 1981 and has since been covered by numerous groups and artists.

Soft Cell’s 1981 synth-pop hit Tainted Love is a remake of a 1964 Gloria Jones song. Jones’ song was a B-side to My Bad Boy’s Comin’ Home, a Motown single that flopped. Jones’ Tainted Love blew up in the UK’s Northern soul scene in the ’70s after British club DJ Richard Searling bought a used copy on a trip to the US. After Tainted Love got a boost from the Northern soul scene, Gloria Jones recorded a new version in 1974, but it failed to chart. When Soft Cell decided to give the song a go in 1981, they changed the key and slowed the tempo.

Lyrics to "Tainted Love" song by Soft Cell: Sometimes I feel I've got to Run away, I've got to Get away from the pain you drive into the heart . .Once I ran to you (I ran) Now I'll run from you This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you Take my tears and that's not nearly all Tainted love (oh) Tainted love.

Soft Cell are an English synthpop duo who came to prominence in the early 1980s, consisting of vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. The duo are principally known for their 1981 hit version of "Tainted Love" and their platinum-selling debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.

Soft Cell's cover of 'Tainted Love' not only catapulted the duo to stardom in the UK, but also went on to spend a record-breaking 43 weeks on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart. The B-side of a flop 1965 single that, 16 years later, topped the UK chart and went Top 10 in the US after being transformed into a synth-pop classic, 'Tainted Love' was Britain's biggest-selling 45 of 1981
