The album was conceived as an effort by Shadow to make an album completely based around sampling. It is structured almost entirely out of sampled elements from genres ranging from hip hop, jazz, funk, psychedelia, as well as samples from films and interviews.
Released November 19, 1996. Tracklist rewiring the Mo' Wax sound that he helped invent sounds like an alien spacecraft touching down on the autobahn late at night, probably to check out Earth’s used-vinyl bins.
But Shadow can't avoid the irony that this is a revival of an album that revives other albums. We could be hearing this music, not for the second time around, but for the third and maybe the fourth. In the documentary Scratch, Shadow takes us to the record store where he found most of the vinyl used on Endtroducing. Upstairs we see the regular shelves and bins, but downstairs, in the basement, are tens of thousands of old albums stacked or dumped all over the room, barely lit by a few light bulbs and littered with dust and dead bats.
