Jane Rhodes/Michel Trempont/Michel Senechal/Charles Burles/Mady Mesple. This is Offenbach's second version of "Ophée aux Enfers" from 1874, a larger scaled, longer, re-orchestrated version of his most famous opera, originally played in 1858 - that earlier version has also been recorded, with several additions to the score from the later, by Marc Minkowski, and that one is actually my choice recording Offenbach: Orphée aux Enfers.

It was under Hippolyte's leadership that Jacques Offenbach created his best known works : La Belle Hélène, Barbe-Bleue, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein and La Périchole. In 1869, on behalf of his son Léon, Hippolyte acquired the Cirque-Impérial and renamed it the Théâtre du Château d'Eau, after its proximity to the place du Château d'Eau (now place de la République). pdf Libretto as originally submitted for censorship.
