Régine Crespin died at age 80 but thankfully she left a significant number of superb recordings that will serve of reminders of her legacy. For this listener one of her finest moments (and there were countless of those moments) is this recording of Maurice Ravel's 'Shéhérazade' coupled with Hector Berlioz' 'Nuits d'été' in collaboration with Ernest Ansermet and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Katherine takes up the 'Presto Recommends' baton this week and selects some favourite recordings of works by Hector Berlioz. Recorded: Geneva, September 1963; Kingsway Hall, May 1967. Sumptuous of tone, supremely sensitive, Crespin was born to illuminate the art of French song. Whether floating the seductive allure of Ravel or revelling in the wit of Poulenc these recordings were and remain classics.

At her peak, French soprano Régine Crespin was universally praised by critics and the public alike. She was praised not only for her elegant technique, nuanced power, and refined but passionate expression, but also for her ability to perform the major roles in nearly every national school with complete confidence and whole-hearted compassion. But, of course, Crespin was at her best in French repertoire, and this disc combining her 1963 recording of orchestral song cycles by Berlioz and Ravel with her 1967 recording of piano accompanied song cycles and chansons by Debussy and Poulenc certainly.

Régine Crespin (23 February 1927 – 5 July 2007) was a French singer who had a major international career in opera and on the concert stage between 1950 and 1989. She started her career singing roles in the dramatic soprano and spinto soprano repertoire, drawing particular acclaim singing Wagner and Strauss heroines. Her classic recording of Berlioz's Les nuits d'été and Ravel's Shéhérazade with Ernest Ansermet and the Suisse Romande Orchestra is regarded by many as one of the finest versions on disc. Among her other important recordings were Sieglinde in Die Walküre, and the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, both for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Sir Georg Solti, and Brünnhilde in Die Walküre with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan on Deutsche Grammophon.
