The League of Gentlemen is a recorded music album by Robert Fripp. The music on the album was performed by members of a band which toured Europe and North America throughout 1980 under the name of 'The League of Gentlemen'.
God Save the King is actually a split release and/or a Robert Fripp compilation, depending on how you look at it. In 1980, Robert Fripp released something of a split disc himself, called God Save the Queen/Under Heavy Manners, consisting of a side of Frippertronics and a side of Discotronics, the latter being Frippertronics with a "dance-oriented" (according to Fripp) rhythm section. Also in 1980, Fripp formed a new group, borrowing the name from his early-'60s band, the League of Gentlemen
This CD compilation is a revised version of the Under Heavy Manners/God Save the Queen album of 1980 and The League of Gentlemen album of 1981.
The six songs on this album that display Fripp's take on 60s guitar instrumentals are really a lot of fun and rate up there with any of his best stuff. I noticed on the album notes that this band played at some fairly rough clubs including the Mud Club in New York. I wonder if Robert enjoyed his year of "slumming it" before retreating back to the regal Court of the Crimson King.
The League of Gentlemen (band). The League of Gentlemen were a band active during March–December 1980 that featured guitarist Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame. Other members included bass guitarist Sara Lee (who later joined Gang of Four, the B-52's, and Indigo Girls), keyboardist Barry Andrews (formerly of XTC; later of Shriekback) and percussionist Johnny Toobad, replaced late in the band's tenure by Kevin Wilkinson (later of China Crisis and Squeeze).
