The black publication Right On! began in 1971 and focused heavily on the Jackson 5, with members adorning covers between January 1972 and April 1974. Jackson became a global superstar following his departure from The Jackson 5. In November 1976, following the debut of the family's weekly variety series, the Jacksons released their self-titled CBS debut under the Philadelphia International subsidiary, produced by Gamble & Huff. Featuring "Enjoy Yourself" and "Show You the Way to Go", the album went gold but failed to generate the sales the brothers had enjoyed while at Motown. A follow-up, Goin' Places, fizzled. Renewing their contract with Epic, the Jacksons were allowed full creative control on their next.

The Jackson 5 were Motown's last major discoveries of the '60s-and the youngest, edging out even Little Stevie Wonder in Michael's case. The youngest of the quintet had absorbed the legends of the past so totally that he sang soul with a maturity beyond his years and danced like James Brown. Their father, Joe Jackson, had drilled his sons endlessly in their hometown of Gary, Indiana.

Once the Jackson 5 grew up and parted ways with Motown, they became the Jacksons - and they knew all about the growing pains that come with young romance. The 1980 funk song "Lovely One" sees Michael, backed by brothers Jackie, Tito, Randy and Marlon, confronting a skeptical lover and trying to prove his dedication. The track peaked at No. 12 on the Hot 100 but hit No. 2 on Billboard's R&B songs chart and No. 1 on the Dance Club Songs chart. 39. "Another Part Of Me" Michael Jackson. Jackson was already a superstar after earning three solo Hot 100 No. 1s - including two from Off the Wall, his first album for Epic - but "Billie Jean" propelled the singer to a true worldwide sensation. With seven weeks at No. 1, the song perhaps most famously introduced the iconic Thriller album to the masses. "Say Say Say" Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson.
