There is a stereo remake of this pairing of the great Oistrakh with Khachaturian conducting the Philharmonia on a multi-disc set of great and notable recordings by King David Oistrakh, but unfortunately, this disc contains the earlier one made just before the stereo era. The playing by all is excellent, but the sound is too murky to be acceptable to the general public

Aram Khachaturian's violin concerto is a violin concerto in three movements composed in 1940. It was composed for David Oistrakh and premiered on September 16, 1940 by Oistrakh. In 1940, Khachaturian was enjoying tremendous professional success and personal joy. He worked on the concerto in the tranquility of a wood composers retreat west of Moscow; he said of the composition that he "worked without effort.

Philharmonia Orchestra. David Oistrakh (violin). Recorded: 1954-11-27. Recording Venue: 26-27 November 1954: Kingsway Hall, London. I. Allegro con fermezza - Cadenza (by D. Oistrakh). The Sabre Dance and the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia may be Khachaturian’s most familiar works, but his colourful style and orchestral flair comes out in all his music, from the virtuoso concertos with their rhapsodic oriental-flavoured slow movements, to the satirical glitter of the Masquerade Suite. After moving to Moscow he took up studies with Myaskovsky at the Conservatoire, eventually becoming a professor there.
