The Rough Guide to the Music of Morocco is a world music compilation album originally released in 2012. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the release contains two discs: an overview of the music of Morocco-featuring such genres as Chaabi and Malhun-is found on Disc One, while Disc Two features the modern rural-urban fusion band Groupe Mazagan. The compilation was curated by Andy Morgan, former manager of Tinariwen and organizer of the Festival in the Desert.
Ask any inhabitant of New Orleans, Louisiana and they will tell you that they are part of the ‘New Orleans Nation’ – an anecdote that captures the independent and uniquely creative vibe of the great city so well. Then we move straight on to the music of the Mardi Gras Indians. The bonus album features Dumpstaphunk, a band who have been described by the New York Times as ‘the best funk band from New Orleans right now’, and they don’t say these things lightly!

While it's impossible to capture the full spectrum of New Orleans music on a single disc – women artists are underrepresented, and the NOLA hip-hop scene that's emerged since the 1990s is skipped entirely – this Rough Guide is a spirited introduction, and as a bonus is accompanied by a second disc featuring emerging heavy funk purveyors Dumpstaphunk.
From the 19th century African music gatherings in Congo Square to the birth of jazz and its offshoots, New Orleans is one of America's most important music cities, and with the Rough Guide to the Music of New Orleans collection, listeners get a well-rounded taste of the Crescent City's musical gumbo.
This Rough Guide gives you a real taste of the whole New Orleans scene. Soak up the classic piano jazz of Professor Longhair, the thick horn blasts of The Hot 8 Brass Band, or the deep grooves of Dumpstaphunk, the latter of which also provide the full-length and fantastically funky bonus album included with this Rough Guide. This album is mostly funk music with a 1970's sound. Its not 100% funk - you also get a tiny bit of rock n roll, brass band (in additional to the funk brass band), a Carlos Santana style song (El Barrio), and a couple of old timey jazz piano songs (which are a pleasure). You also get a bonus album! Unfortunately, its all Dumpstaphunk. So, yes - you get even MORE funk ! I'm struggling to find nice things to say about this album. I wish I hadn't made the purchase.
Think of a Rough Guide to the United States that included blues, Gershwin, a contemporary country singer, one Cajun track, and nothing from any pop star, no rock music of any kind. You might enjoy it, and it would give you an idea of the nation's variety, but you'd be missing out on a large part of the people's everyday musical life. Perhaps this album needs a companion piece. New Orleans native Molly Mikhael continues to mourn the loss of her mother. Not afraid to show her pain, the dream pop artist decided to do what she does best - let her beautiful voice and words be heard.
The 'Rough Guide to World Music for Children' is the perfect album to broaden children's musical horizons through the diverse collection of tried and tested tracks from around the world. Also includes a free 'Dance the World' bonus CD, containing the best dance music from around the world. Welcome to a world of joyous upbeat sounds that children love, carefully selected from across the planet. This Rough Guide spotlights the front-runners of an explosive revival of African roots music. Listen to world-class artists, such as Staff Benda Bilili and the Bedouin Jerry Can Band, mix it up by infusing traditional sounds with the ultra modern, and by using ingenious homemade instruments, many of which are built from junk-yard materials. These are the sweet sounds of a movement which has not simply preserved, but truly reinvented musical genres with outstanding results.
The peerless Rough Guide series has been going now for very nearly 20 years introducing people to music they never even dreamt existed. One of their latest releases focusses on the music of Ethiopia & it runs the whole gamut of such, from traditional to modern & from local to overseas. Hec, it even features our old friends The Ex at one point. Louder Than War’s Paul Scott-Bates has been listening to the album & as you’ll see has been suitably impressed. My expectations of Ethiopian music were maybe very predictable and, it would seem, misguided. Loud voices and chants.
