The String Trio of New York is an American jazz chamber ensemble. The group was founded in 1977 by bassist John Lindberg, violinist Billy Bang, and guitarist James Emery. Though they initially worked on improvisational playing and on their own compositions, they eventually began taking on commissions, as well as doing arrangements of other jazz musicians' works.

Oliver Lake (born September 14, 1942) is an American jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer, poet, and visual artist. He is known mainly for alto saxophone but he also performs on soprano and flute. During the 1960s Lake worked with the Black Artists Group in St. Louis. In 1977 he founded the World Saxophone Quartet with David Murray, Julius Hemphill, and Hamiet Bluiett. He has worked in the group Trio 3 with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille

recording with the String Trio of New York (2005's Frozen Ropes on Barking Hoop); and issuing such recordings as Cloth by the Oliver Lake Big Band in 2003 and Oliver Lake Quartet Live (featuring Dine' vocalist and flutist Mary Redhouse) in 2006. That same year he received the Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award at the Kennedy Center. Two years later he issued Makin' It by the Oliver Lake Organ Trio and saw a reissue of 1974's Passing Thru (both on Passin' Thru). He also released Time Being by Trio 3 on Intakt.
