Latterman’s seminal record No Matter Where We G. .turns ten years old this week. The album didn’t redefine the wheel, or change the national scene in the way that the bands that came before them did. But for the East Coast punk community that took in Latterman’s influence, from their melodic sing along punk to the radical politics that lay underneath the record’s lyrical themes, to the gigantic tree of remarkable bands that blossomed once they called it quits in 2007, their second album defined a generation. So when Latterman released their debut, 2002’s Turn Up the Punk, We’ll Be Singing, the band wore the influence of their feminist politics on their sleeve.

Filled to the brim with gang choruses, sing along hooks, and melodic soloing, this album could very well be the sountrack to your next party. Long Island is a veritable breeding ground for hardcore and its variants. Bands like Glassjaw, Crime in Stereo, and This is Hell all have spawned from there. Probably Latterman’s best quality is the sheer enjoyment factor inherent in their music. The album is chalk full of catchy choruses, sing along chants, and plenty of hooks. Granted, this band is no Panic! At the Disco, as their sound is much less polished and refined. Latterman shows probably better than any other band out there that music can be catchy while not feeling cheap or forced.

Latterman - Turn Up The Punk, We’ll Be Singing, 2006, Clear, 1/400, Yo-Yo Records)

"Our Better Halves" is the last song written by Latterman before they broke up back in 2007. It was to be released on their following album, but the band had split before working further on any material. It was recorded at Phil's house in May 2007 on Long Island. On this recording Pat played drums, Matt played bass and sang, Phil played guitar and sang and "maybe" Crozier played, but they don't remember.
