Zoot Suit" b/w "I'm the Face" was the first single of the British rock band the Who, who recorded it under the name the High Numbers in an attempt to appeal to a mod audience. Zoot Suit" was written by Peter Meaden, the band's first manager. The song is a direct copy of "Misery" by the American R&B group the Dynamics, while the B-side, "I'm The Face", is a copy of Slim Harpo's "I Got Love If You Want I. The single was meant for a mod audience, but failed to chart.

He renamed the group the High Numbers, dressed them up in mod clothes, secured a second, more favourable audition with Fontana and wrote the lyrics for both sides of their single "Zoot Suit"/"I'm the Face" to appeal to mods  . To alleviate financial pressure on the band, Lambert arranged a song-writing deal which required each member to write two songs for the next album.

Artist: The High Numbers. Album: The Who Hits 50, 2014. Lyrics: I'm the hippiest number in town and I'll tell you why, I'm the snappiest dresser right down to my inch wide tie, And to get you wise I'll explain it to you, A few of the things that a face is supposed to do. I wear zoot suit jacket with side vents five inches long, I have two-tone brogues yeah you know this is wrong. But the main thing is unless you're a fool, Ah you know you gotta know, yeah you know, yeah you gotta be cool

They eventually signed the High Numbers out from under Meaden and encouraged the group's guitarist, Pete Townshend, to follow the Beatles' model and write his own songs. By November, the High Numbers were known as the Who again.

Gold found a original in box of records bought from auction for £10 not the best looking disc but clean and plays both sides no problem ????????
this is a decent cd single that was released back in 1991 in a 12 cd single box set called the fontana records singles, w/ the cd boom at that time they did single replications of THIS HIGH NUMBERS 45 as well as 11 others, pretty scarce weather you find this one w/ the box set or without........................ this has since then been done on vinyl replication as well wich i have along with the very original copy from 1964 wich is very very hard to find if at all..........................
well i FINALLY got a near MINT copy of this holy grail of a who 45 today only a few days after the 45 was released 53 years ago on july 3 1964, i have built up a pretty impressive who collection but now that i got an original high numbers 45 in this insane shiny new like condition im speachless as i have been after a copy of this for about two decades but gladly i was fussy about the condition and this beauty showed up, THIS IS THE ORIGINAL ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know there have been a couple of reissues starting around 1980 but THIS IS THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the fontana company sleeve and all, these are out there but to find one in the condition i did can take a good 20 years trust me, this is a beauty. im still not sure weather there was only 500 or 1000 of these released in july 1964 but either way WOW as half of them went to pete meaden and he sold them at high numbers/who gigs in 64 and 65, after that they where gone......................
£1,400 eh? Blimey. How much did you pay for yours?
I now remember, read it on The Who's official homepage: "ZOOT SUIT b/w I’M THE FACE failed to make the charts. The original single on the Fontana label, however, has since become the best known and most valuable collectors’ item in the band’s entire UK catalogue. Mint condition singles can set you back anything up to £1,400. Rumour has it that only 1,000 were pressed, and that several were apparently bought up by John Entwistle’s grandmother."
Cool - congratulation! I heard/read Entwistle's grandma bought a whole bunch to support them. I wonder where they are now?
as stated below this single came out in the us in 1980 with the us compilation lp through the back door, the compilation featured some bands from the mod revival scene of 1979/80 and i guess the label felt the perfect top off was to include one of the original mod singles from 1964 by the who who became one of the biggest rock bands in the world, of coarse this 45 is from 1964 and the who where the high numbers at that time, this 45 was a 1980 reissue...
this was a nice uk re issue of the 1964 high numbers ep, this 45 and picture sleeve came with both the uk and us versions of a mod revival compilation lp released in 1980 called through the back door, the lp consists of a host of mod revival bands from all around the uk during the 1978 to 1980 mod revival scene, as a bonus this 45 was taped by the record label to the back of the lp and the 45 was a bonus, i bought this some 35 years ago in 1980 but removed the 45 for better protection, i would reccomend find the compilation lp THROUGH THE BACK DOOR FROM 1980 and make sure this 45 is with it in tact and get the whole set complete, this uk 45 is only part of a whole set.......
This release (DOOR 4) was a standard UK RE, not a freebie on the LP. That's only the version with typewriter style text on the front.
this was a very nice FRENCH reissue of this classic 45 originally released in 1964 in a plain uk fontana records company sleeve, also please note there was a 1991 re issue of the uk fontana records reissue as well, anyway this here with the unique picture sleeve was released in france in 1980, though not original this 45 does not seem to pop up often and it was a very nice edition to my collection a couple of years ago, of coarse this includes the only 2 tracks ever released by the high numbers in 1964 zoot suit and im the face, great for any who collection... remember THIS IS THE FRENCH EDITION FROM 1980 WITH THE NICE BLACK PIC SLEEVE...
This was a free single with the LP "Thru The Back Door" of the same label.
