Bassist Joshua Abrams is best known as a consummate sideman on the local jazz scene, where he’s been a steady presence for the last two decades. But he’s a proven versatilist, as evidenced by stints with Bonnie Prince Billy and even the Roots, with whom he plucked upright years before they became a fixture of late-night television. Tenor saxophonist David Boykin guides the first half of the new LP toward two dynamic extremes, contrasting the free, spiraling San Anto with the hushed and nuanced Moon Hunger.
Lisa Alvarado and Joshua Abrams of Natural Information Society. The song Finite is a standout from the group’s new album, Mandatory Reality. Charlie Gross/Charlie Gross). Finite is nearly 40 minutes long, which makes its title both funny and true. Playing the guimbri, a three-stringed bass instrument, Abrams gently draws his seven comrades - including the ts Lisa Alvarado and Hamid Drake - into a groove that instantly feels like it’s spinning, but with enchanted slowness. The horns and winds politely swap single notes. A piano glints, then goes poof.

RBody/Head, Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society. Thu 3/7, 7:30 PM, Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room, Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan, sold out, all-ages. Chicago jazz and improvised-music linchpin Joshua Abrams could continue to explore the outer reaches of minimalism with his Natural Information Society ensemble for decades and have no trouble maintaining a hypnotic atmosphere. The eight-piece band’s upcoming fifth album, Mandatory Reality (Eremite), opens with two sprawling tracks. Joshua Abrams and Lisa Alvarado help give this Chicago collective’s transcendent minimalism a family feeling.
An ever-shifting project helmed by the t Joshua Abrams, an early member of the Roots, the Natural Information Society revels in experimentation. In 2017, they released their fourth album, Simultonality, which was largely inspired by their extensive touring.
